Mike Whitney, PM
Worshipful Brother Mike Whitney

I was a stranger in Madison looking for people to meet and civic activities to become involved with. First I was asked to join the Downtown Optimist Club which I did. At one of the meetings a friend remarked that I had forgotten to wear my Optimist Club pin (subjecting me to a 25 cent fine). He also noted that I had not worn my Masonic pin. I informed him that I didn't have one. When he asked why, I responded "Nobody has asked me to join the Masons." To which he replied "Nobody ever will." So I asked "How am I supposed to get a pin then?" That's HOW I joined.

Why did I join? I've always had a curiosity about Masons. My grandfather was a Mason but I was too young to understand what that meant. I knew they had wonderful buildings, supported Children's Hospitals and were secret. From that point I guess it was curiosity as well as a need for comraderie that inspired me to take the first step. After becoming an Entered Apprentice and spending time becoming educated on Masonry by my poster(s), I learned that Masonry could mean a great deal more to me thru its standards of moral rectitude & conduct. That's when I really began to understand what Masons really are and why. Those who have lived with me through this period will be the first to tell you that it has had a VERY positive impact on my disposition, demeanor, and deportment. Aside from my family, Masonry has been the greatest positive influence in my short 58 year life.

WebMason's note: The term "poster" used by Bro. Whitney above refers to another Mason who volunteers to assist a newly made Mason in learning the lessons of the various degrees and the related Masonic material.
